Hats and Sleep

I’m going to get a quick post in before I get to bed.

I started knitting a hat a few weeks ago. I finally finished it and when I put it on my head, I noticed that it was way too small. It was the right size for a child, certainly not an adult with even an average size head. Now, I don’t do well frogging back and restarting in the middle of a project, so I faced the inevitable. I had to rip it all out and start over. And that’s what I did. This time around, it hasn’t taken me as long as before. It took me about two weeks last time, and I’m almost done after about a week. I plan on finishing either tomorrow or Wednesday. It’s a really cute pattern and I’ve had it on my list since about mid fall, possibly before, so I’m really excited to get it done. Once I get it finished, I’ll post some pics.

Of course, I won’t be able to wear the hat until I get the scarf finished. Since the hat did not have a matching scarf, I had to search for something that didn’t have a pattern that stands out. Mainly because I don’t like it when hats and scarves don’t match. I am somewhat obsessive about things being and looking the same. I would have tried to convert the pattern from the hat into a scarf, but the hat is knit in the round in a lacy pattern, and I’m not sure the yarn overs and the k2togs would look the same on purl sides. I could have knit it in the round like the scarf I’m knitting to go with the hat, but the pattern is kind of time consuming, and I don’t think I would have enough beads. So, I’ll just keep going with what I have and hope no one notices the two different patterns.

Well, I must be going to bed. It’s past my bedtime, and I’m not going to get my 8 hours in before work tomorrow. The one bad thing about having a grown up job is that it starts at 8am every morning. This means I have to wake up before 6am in order to have time to get ready. So if I want to get 8 hours, I have to be asleep before 10, which sucks when friends want to go out during the week. I just get used to the fact that some days I’ll be really tired, or I will have to decline socializing. Oh well…

Hello

Now that I have some time to sit down and write, I’ve decided to start a knitting blog. I’ll mostly discuss my current knitting projects, but other pieces of my life may float in occasionally.

Firstly, let me tell you a little bit about myself. I picked the name ‘theunlikelyknitter’ because I am not your stereotypical knitter. After knitting for three years, I’ve come to realize there really is no stereotypical knitter, but those outside of our little circle think there is. I’ve always been an athlete. I played sports through high school played volleyball in college. Recently, I’ve taken up golf. I took lessons a couple of years ago and played as much as I could that summer. This last year I was unable to play because I was cooped up at home studying my butt off for the CPA exam (which I passed 🙂 yay!). I’m also not old, which it seems is one of those outsiders requirements.

I mentioned earlier that I have time to write this blog. This is due to the fact that I have a new job (woo hoo). I am an Auditor with the Office of the Auditor General in Michigan. I may work more hours than I had previously at my part time job, but the hours are consistent instead of random. I used to work retail, which means I could open the store, work the mid shift or close the store. It was never a consistent schedule. Now, I am out of work at 5pm every day and have the nights and weekends to do whatever. It also helped that I started a couple days before the end of the year, so I had a 4 day weekend. I’m on the last day of the weekend, and I’m getting quite bored. I actually cleaned, which is not something I do often. It did give my eyes a bit of a break from my knitting.

Here’s what projects are on the needles right now:

Ambigram Scarf-Started this as a break from the hat. Reasoning is below. It uses the same yarn as the hat because I am making them to be a set, even though the patterns are not the same. I figure no one will look close enough to tell or even care.

Cassiopiea Hat-I’ve started this hat 3 or 4 times now due to mistakes in the pattern. I’m not great at frogging to a specific spot and picking up the stitches, so I’ve frogged the entire thing every time. Because of this, I have it on a time out for a while. Right now, it’s about 2 rows into the brim.

Moss Stitch Afghan– This has been going on for almost a year now. I’m about 1/3 of the way through it. It’s basically a place holder, something to work on when I don’t want a difficult pattern or something for when I’ve got no other projects.

For Christmas, I received from my mom and Santa a bunch of knitting things. I got a set of Knit Picks interchangable needles from my mom. I pretty much love them. I also bought myself some DPNs from Knit Picks, as well as a few miscellaneous tools, and a few different yarns. These I labeled from Santa, as I usually do. The hat and scarf above are using some of the new needles.

I am also thinking about starting a pair of socks with my new DPNs. I bought some alpaca sock yarn, but the colors make patterns difficult to see, so I have to find a simple pattern. I’ve got a couple in the running.

Well, I’ve got to get back to my knitting for the night. I think I’ll give the hat another chance. I spent enough time on the scarf today, so I want a bit more of a challenge.
